This essay was first posted on the Red Sox mailing list on September 9, 1994. ----- A few months ago, I posted a question asking what the best team of Sox players who never played for another team would be (considering only players who had at least a 5 year career). Much discussion ensued, and a reasonable team was put together. Since that time, I've been spending time with my CD-ROM of Total Baseball and I think I've found every player who meets those criteria. I've listed each player at their primary position, along with their career dates, and cumulative hitting averages (for fielders), or Win-Loss record and ERA (for pitchers). When several players are eligible at a single position, I've listed them in decreasing order of games played/innings pitched. BTW, I have a list of players and managers who were lifelong Sox, but who's careers fell short of the 5 year mark. If there's interest I can post it separately, though its longer (about 250 players, each with 1-line career summaries). Or if the list isn't interested, I can email it separately to individuals who request it. Players who played solely for the Red Sox during their 5+ year career: P Name (Dates # years Games AVG/ OBP/ SLG) C Bill Carrigan (1906;08-16, 10 yrs, 709 G, .257/.334/.314) C Bob Montgomery (1970-79, 10 yrs, 387 G, .258/.300/.372) C Marc Sullivan (1982;84-87, 5 yrs, 360 G, .186/.237/.258) C John Marzano (1987-92, 6 yrs, 169 G, .232/.265/.338) 1B Dave Stapleton (1980-86, 7 yrs, 582 G, .271/.312/.398) 2B Bobby Doerr (1937-51, 14 yrs, 1865 G, .288/.362/.461) 2B Chuck Schilling (1961-65, 5 yrs, 541 G, .239/.305/.317) 3B Rico Petrocelli (1963-76, 13 yrs, 1553 G, .251/.336/.420) LF Carl Yastrzemski (1961-83, 23 yrs, 3308 G, .285/.382/.462) LF Ted Williams (1939-60, 19 yrs, 2292 G, .344/.483/.634) LF Jim Rice (1974-89, 16 yrs, 2089 G, .298/.356/.502) LF Mike Greenwell* (1985-94, 10 yrs, 831 G+, .306/.377/.464+)+thru 1992 CF Dom DiMaggio (1940-53, 11 yrs, 1399 G, .298/.383/.419) OF Kevin Romine (1985-91, 7 yrs, 331 G, .251/.308/.325) OF Olaf Henriksen (1911-17, 7 yrs, 321 G, .269/.392/.329) Oddly enough, during the initial round of discussion, we missed Sullivan, Marzano, and Romine, though they are among the most recent players on the list. The catchers are a sorry bunch with Carrigan or Montgomery being the best of the bunch (though none of them played fulltime). First base can be made better my moving Yaz from an overcrowded left field. It is interesting that shortstop is the only position where no player qualifies (though Stapleton and Petrocelli both played some there). Henriksen is essentially a Kevin Romine who walks some -- otherwise, they're practically identical players. Anyone remember Chuck Schilling? He's before my time. The rest of the players are ones we came up with on the first pass. Move Rice to DH, and Greenwell to RF (where he played a bit when he first came up, and your starting lineup might look like: C Montgomery SS Stapleton DH Rice 1B Yaz LF Williams 2B Doerr CF DiMaggio 3B Petrocelli RF Greenwell Batting order? How 'bout DiMaggio Yaz Williams Rice Greenwell Doerr Petrocelli Montgomery Stapleton Not sure how else we can move people around to get a legitimate lineup. Pitchers: If at least half a pitcher's games were starts, they are listed as a starter (SP), otherwise they're in here as a reliever (RP). P Name (Dates # years Innings W/L Record, ERA) SP Roger Clemens* (1984-94, 11 yrs, 2031 IP+, 152-72 W-L+, 2.80 ERA+) SP Mel Parnell (1947-56, 10 yrs, 1753 IP, 123-75 W-L, 3.50 ERA) SP Tom Brewer (1954-61, 8 yrs, 1509 IP, 91-82 W-L, 4.00 ERA) SP Tex Hughson (1941-49, 8 yrs, 1376 IP, 96-54 W-L, 2.94 ERA) SP Ray Collins (1909-15, 7 yrs, 1336 IP, 84-62 W-L, 2.51 ERA) SP Willard Nixon (1950-58, 9 yrs, 1234 IP, 69-72 W-L, 4.39 ERA) SP Boo Ferriss (1945-50, 6 yrs, 880 IP, 65-30 W-L, 3.64 ERA) SP Rube Foster (1913-17, 5 yrs, 842 IP, 58-34 W-L, 2.36 ERA) SP Charlie Wagner (1938-46, 6 yrs, 528 IP, 32-23 W-L, 3.91 ERA) SP Yank Terry (1940;42-45, 5 yrs, 457 IP, 20-28 W-L, 4.09 ERA) RP Bob Stanley (1977-89, 13 yrs, 1707 IP, 115-97 W-L, 3.64 ERA) RP Curt Fullerton (1921-25;33, 6 yrs, 423 IP, 10-37 W-L, 5.11 ERA) RP Emerson Dickman (1936;38-41, 5 yrs, 350 IP, 22-15 W-L, 5.33 ERA) + 1994 not included in stats More starting pitchers than I would have thought. The Sox of the mid-40's are well represented. Clemens dominates this bunch, though Hughson is pretty good. The relief staff is Stanley and a couple of nobodys.
